Abstract Thoughts

Ken Wiley, of Saranac Lake, was awarded the "Best in Show" Award at the Abstraction juried show hosted by Bluseed Studios. His small painting had a title something like "Tribute to Rinehardt and Kline". Ken is a former professor of art at North Country Community College and is an active, exhibiting member of the Adirondack Artists Guild.

Jess Collins received an award as well as Honorable Mention awards for ArtWorks member Peter Shrope and Artists Guild member Barry Lobdell.

Linda Sweeny, pastel artist from Lake Placid, was the juror. It is really an outstanding show with a nice variety of media and clearly gets across the message that abstract art is alive and well in our neck of the woods. The show will run through Feb 28.

COMING UP: Bluseed is having an "Open Minded Mic Night" Thursday, Jan 30, hosted by Crowfeather. It begins at 7:30 pm.

Winter Carnival starts Friday Jan 31 - Feb 9. Check out their schedule online and enjoy the beautiful artistry of the Ice Palace. The Chamber of Commerce is hosting a FREE performance by the original members of Inisheer, Sat Feb 1 at 4 pm in the Harrietstown Town Hall, Bluseed is hosting a Winter Carnival celtic music performance by Emish, on Feb 1 at 8 pm.

This Sunday, Feb 2, from 2 - 5, there will be an opening reception at the Paul Smith's College VIC for "Old Crows & Other Blackbirds", a group show of works by: Anne Burnham, Ray Whalen, Geoff Cobb, Rebekah Wilkins–Pepiton, Michael Hart, Noreen Sadue, Linda Sauther, Arnold Sauther, and other friends from the Northern Foothills. It will be up through Feb 28. Come out and ski too - most of the trails are in great shape.

Russ Hartung, a photographer from Morrisonville, is one of the new members of NorthWind Fine Arts and he will be the featured artist in February. The opening reception will be Friday Feb 7 from 5 - 7. At the Adirondack Artists Guild, members have donated pieces for a silent auction to benefit Historic Saranac Lake. Each year the Guild chooses a different, local, not-for-profit group and dedicates a show to them. The reception will also be Friday Feb 7 from 5 - 7. Celebrate Winter Carnival and the arts in Saranac Lake! Full schedule on the ArtWorks "Events" page.

Winter Carnival is coming January 31 - our beautiful ice palace has had no shortage of ice this year. Lots of great events are scheduled and can be found on their web site.

Opening on February 7, from 5 - 7 pm, will be "The Photography of Russ Hartung" at NorthWind Fine Arts, and "Our Kinda Town" at the Adirondack Artists Guild.

Russ is one of the newest members of NorthWind. "I have spent most of my 56 years visiting or living in the Adirondack region of New York state. My subjects are the scenes that come from an exploration of the back roads, trails and waterways. Sometimes these images are happy accidents but more often come of repeadedly spending time in a specific area over and over again until that special moment presents itself. My main focus is landscape photograpy but capturing images of wildlife is a growing passion."

The February exhibit at the Adirondack Artists Guild is a benefit show for Historic Saranac Lake. Each of the Guild members has created one or two pieces that relate to the history or unique character of our village. It will be a Silent Auction that will start on Feb 7 and end at 2 pm on March 2. Come discover something new about the community and bid on a piece that touches your heart!

Want your portrait painted? Artists Guild member Diane Leifheit has initiated a portrait project: "Face to Face: Drawn to Saranac Lake. Learn more about it HERE.

2014 ArtWorks Memberships Now Available!

Remember who received the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce "Business of the Year" Award for 2013? Yes - it was ArtWorks!

You could be part of this awesome organization by joining us in 2014. Our membership year runs Jan 1 - Dec 31. Professional level membership, for artists and arts-related businesses and organizations is $150. This will get you an individual listing on our web site, with an image, contact information, and links to your own web site. You will be included in the marketing and advertising products we produce. We will actively promote your events on our online calendar, other online calendars, our Facebook page, through email announcements, and in posters, flyers, brochures and other printed media. And of course we'd love to have you attend our meetings and events!

We also have a Business Sponsor program. Any business that would like to help support the arts in our area can become one of our Business Sponsors. By making a contribution of $150, or more, your dollars will go towards supporting our events: the Cabin Fever Film Festival, the 3rd Thursday ArtWalks, the Adirondack Plein Air Festival, Hobofest, and the Studio Tour. It can be divided evenly between the 5 events or you can choose which one you'd like to support. In return, we will acknowledge your contribution on our web site and in some of our print materials, provide you with a Saranac Lake ArtWorks Business Sponsor sticker, and we won't bother you the rest of the year for any more donations!

The last option is to just become a Supporting Member with a contribution of $25.

Saranac Lake ArtWorks is becoming a major force in this region. Our members have a significant economic impact through the sales of the products they produce and revenue from the events they organize. That benefit spreads through the community as we attract more visitors interested in the arts and they shop, dine, and lodge here - and Saranac Lake is becoming more and more attractive as a place for artists and arts patrons to live!
